GUIDE TRAVEL TO MOROCCO
The Morocco Switchers Travel Guide
produced under the EU-funded SwitchMed programme, highlights sustainable tourism initiatives across Morocco. It positions the country as not only a destination for its iconic souqs, architecture, beaches, and mountains but also as a hub for eco-friendly entrepreneurs (“Switchers”) who promote green, circular economies.
The guide is divided into four main sections — Where to Stay, What to Eat, What to Do, and What to Bring Home — offering travelers authentic, eco-conscious alternatives beyond mainstream attractions. Accommodation options include ecolodges such as Terres d’Amanar in the Atlas Mountains, Atlas Kasbah Ecolodge in Agadir, and Eco-Auberge Le Festival in Tinghir, each blending sustainability with cultural immersion. Innovative concepts like Djebli Club even allow guests to “pay” with skills instead of money, supporting local communities through knowledge exchange.
For souvenirs, the guide features creative enterprises tackling waste and empowering artisans, such as Ifassen (recycled woven bags), EcoHeat (isothermal cooking bags), and Doumeign (handcrafted baskets). Food recommendations range from street specialties like harira soup and chebakia pastries to traditional tanjia and tajine, with sustainable dining options including the non-profit Amal Center.
The suggested four-day itinerary balances culture and eco-tourism: cycling tours in Marrakech, visits to permaculture and cultural centers, exploration of Essaouira, and hiking excursions promoting biodiversity.
Overall, the guide encourages visitors to travel responsibly while supporting local innovation. It emphasizes Morocco’s growing role in sustainable tourism and showcases how conscious travel can enrich experiences while fostering social and environmental impact.
In essence: this guide reframes Morocco as more than a tourist hotspot — it’s a living example of how green entrepreneurship and cultural heritage can create meaningful, sustainable journeys.
